Dr. Martina Karle is a Geologist and Senior Researcher
at the Lower Saxony Institute for historical coastal research (NIhK) in Wilhelmshaven.
Together with Friederike Bungenstock Martina is leading the Department “Coastal and Quaternary Geology”. Martina is specialized in coastal sedimentary systems. Her research focuses on the relationship between natural landscape dynamics and human adaptation strategies. She is working on a process-oriented understanding of the interrelationships between coastal morphological processes and the changes in human habitats in the northern German coastal region during the Holocene. Areas of investigation include estuaries, mudflats, islands, marshes and other coastal zones on the North Sea and Baltic Sea.
